    Many people seem to have a confused understanding of the concept of "loudness" in speakers. When it comes to the volume of a speaker, many musicians only consider the power and rated wattage of the speaker, and in general, a higher wattage does not necessarily mean a higher "loudness". In fact, it cannot be denied that "watts" are an important influencing factor, and at the same time, the power of the speaker is also an important factor affecting the loudness of the speaker.
    1、 Watt count, power, and SPL
    How much wattage will result in double the loudness? Let's imagine if there are two speakers, one with 10 watts and the other with 20 watts. The wattage of a 20 watt speaker is twice that of another speaker, but after conversion, doubling the wattage will only increase 3dB SPL. Please remember that if you want to double the volume of your speaker, you need to increase it by 10dB, and a 20 watt speaker may have twice the wattage of a 10 watt speaker, but it will not produce twice the volume. The same applies to high-power devices, where a 100 watt speaker does not produce double the "loudness" of a 50 watt speaker. If it is the same speaker, it will only increase the loudness by 3dB. Although the volume change will be very noticeable, it will never double the loudness.
    2、 Speaker sensitivity level
    Speakers in speakers also have specifications regarding sensitivity and effectiveness - they convert input electrical energy into sound energy. Dynamic dynamic speakers (which can be found in most guitar and bass speakers) are very inefficient as they convert most of the input power into heat rather than sound. Normally, the measurement of the sensitivity of a speaker is conducted in an anechoic chamber (non reflective, soundproof room) and described in units/formats similar to 90dB @ 1W/1m.
    Translated into English, it means "90 decibels (SPL) and 1 watt of power produce a sound pressure level of 90 decibels at a distance of one meter from the speaker. ”Efficient speakers have higher sensitivity, while inefficient speakers have lower sensitivity. Efficient speakers will make your speaker louder.
    Therefore, we assume a speaker with a sensitivity of 90dB @ 1W/1m and a power of up to 100W. If we adjust the power of the speaker to 1 watt, it will produce 90dB at a distance of 1 meter. If we adjust the power to 2 watts, the measured SPL will become 93dB. If we increase the power of the speaker to 10 watts, the measured SPL will increase to 100dB. At this point, the loudness will double compared to the previous 1 watt power. Therefore, in reality, they require more than 10 times the power to make us feel the doubling of loudness. Since the maximum power of our imagined speaker is 100 watts, we can double the volume again. In theory, a power higher than 100 watts will produce 110dB SPL. 1 watt=90dB. Power of 100 watts or higher=110dB. This is a huge increase in power, but you can only feel a four fold increase in volume level.
    As you can see, to achieve a "doubled" volume effect, you need to increase the power and wattage of the speaker by a certain amount. Let's introduce the sensitivity/efficiency of the speaker into this formula. If we replace the 90dB @ 1W/1m speaker with 100dB @ 1W/1m, the digital changes will be very noticeable. We know that an input power of 1 watt will provide us with 100dB SPL. Remember, the first speaker requires 10 watts of power to achieve the same volume! Therefore, installing efficient speakers will allow us to achieve greater volume. Similarly, it also applies to the maximum power processing capability of all speakers. Assuming a 100dB @ 1W/1m speaker can handle up to 100 watts, it can provide up to 120dB SPL; The maximum level of doubling the volume of a 90dB @ 1W/1m 100W speaker is only 110dBSPL.
    3、 Decibel and volume level
    Decibel, abbreviated as "dB", is a unit of measurement for the ratio between two numbers. Okay, I understand that many people are not very interested in this, so I will simplify things and try not to involve "math" problems. Regarding logarithmic scales, you cannot simply understand them in a conventional way - for example, doubling a number may increase, but it does not necessarily mean "doubling". For example, 100dB is twice as loud as 50dB, but that doesn't mean its "loudness" is "twice" as loud as 50dB. When it comes to "loudness", it involves the aspect of sound pressure level (SPL), and a level increase of about 10dB will make the perceived "doubling" of loudness. In other words, if a speaker capable of producing 90dB SPL is compared to a speaker capable of producing 100dB, most listeners would assume that the second speaker has about twice the "loudness" of the first speaker.
    4、 Speaker efficiency and power processing capability+speaker power=maximum volume
    Remember! Increasing the power of the speaker will make it louder, and increasing the sensitivity of the speaker will give it higher power within the available power range. So, this also means that the "loudness" of any speaker cannot be judged solely based on wattage. It is necessary to know the power processing capability and sensitivity of the speaker, which are important factors that can enhance the loudness of the speaker. If a 15 watt speaker is equipped with a relatively inefficient speaker, but its loudness is sufficient to meet your requirements, then there is no need to specifically purchase a high wattage speaker, just replace it with an efficient speaker. Similarly, a 100 watt speaker may not be necessary; If the 95dB @ 1W/1m speaker in a 50 watt speaker is replaced with a 101dB @ 1W/1m speaker, there will be a significant change in volume level that needs to be accepted. In fact, when using inefficient speakers, a 100 watt one is not even as loud as a 50 watt one.
